Bats -N- Bios

I had something weird happen last night! I was sitting here in my room surfing the net when I heard what sounded like a scratching noise coming from the door area of my room. It was slightly ajar to allow some air flow through. When suddenly a freakin' bat flew into my room! It startled the crap out of me because it flew right in front of my face and I kinda panicked and jumped up. I was still holding on to the mouse when I did that and accidentally yanked on the cord pretty good. My optical mouse uses a USB controller and the connector dislodged. I got the bat out of my room and closed my door (I'll deal with the rat with wings today if I can find it and if the cats don't get it first, lol!). Anyway, I knew I had to shut down the PC first before reconnecting the mouse and also for some reason the whole system froze so there was no way to shut the system down except by doing a forced shutdown (I couldn't even get Task Manager to populate), holding the power button till it did shut down worked. So I turned off the power, reconnected the mouse, powered back up and nothing, zilch, nada, just a blank screen! The BIOS wouldn't even boot let alone the operating system! I was thinking then, great, what now (I had one of my back-up hard drives bite the dust the other day)! Thinking it might be a CMOS memory problem, because everything would power up at start-up but the BIOS wouldn't load, I got out the owners manual and found out where the CMOS jumper terminals were located on the motherboard. Shut the power down, unplugged the power cable and used the jumper to clear the CMOS RAM. That did it! After powering back up I was able to reconfigure the BIOS after that. Did a cleaning, defragging and ran a chkdsk as well so it's ok now. STUPID BAT, LOL!!!

STUPID BAT, LOL!!!

Hi Ritchie,

What a bat! In Sweden we have bats, but they are very timid animals flying around in the countryside in the nighttime. They are very shy, and sleep during daylight in unpopulated houses like barns etc or in caverns. I have never heard of any bats entering houses with people and attacked humans! Maybe there are different kinds of bats in the world? In Sweden we have very timid ones, maybe you have other agressive ones in PA!? We must say that you were lucky, that your eyes were not destroyed by that nasty bat!

Regarding your backup systemdrive, I wonder, why you got all those problems! I have many times reloaded my systemdrive with any Norton Ghost (image) after thunderstorms, power failures, etc. without any problems!

Cheers,

sweidre

PS. Once again! When you were attacked by the bat you panicked, maybe also the bat panicked in that strange computer environment! Glad to hear, that this incident got a happy end, Rithie! DS.

Hi Sweidre, that bat didn't attack me. It just startled me when it flew into my room and I guess I kinda overreacted. They are usually benign creatures but they have been known to carry the rabies virus. How it got into the house in the first place is anybody's guess. They can squeeze themselves through pretty small openings. I was able to find, trap it and I let it go outside today thank God. Actually they do a lot of good by eating mosquitoes and the like. My computer troubles didn't end with having to reset the CMOS however. I was using my browser when the system crashed and Firefox was all messed up as well. When closing the browser it wouldn't completely close. It was still running in the background eating up huge quantities of RAM. I had to use Task Manager to close the program. I couldn't get FF to re-start either so I couldn't even run it in safe mode to see what the problem was or make any changes to it at all for that matter. I just spent the good part of this evening completely uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox and installing my favorite add-ons. More fun with Firefox! For some reason the desktop and quick launch icons for Firefox are not displaying correctly now. They do work so I guess I can live with that. Man, what a hassle! I never want to yank my mouse cord out like that again!

Alright, I thought the bat attacked you. But bats are ugly animals, anyhow. In Swedish we call them "Fladdermöss = Fluttermice or Flappingmice, because they look mice with long ears and some sort of wings. But, in fact, I do not what animals they are related to.

Regarding FF5, it happens often, when restart or switch off the computer, that I get a message saying that I have FF still running and I am adviced to go back to close it first. Ok, I can use TaskManager or WinPatrol for that. I wonder, if it possible two have one or more FF5s running. I close one, but have still one instance of FF running. In earlier versions of FF I do not think it was possible.

Cheers,

Bats are mammals Sweidre. Actually with earlier versions you could have more than one instance of FF running simultaneously but I've never tried it with FF5. I don't think you can though.

Hi Ritchie,

I think also, that bats are mammals. So are mice. The "wings" of the bats are not real wings as birds have. The "wings" of the bats I think are only skins grown between the legs, so that they can "fly" in the air in a strange manner. During the time of dinosaures, there were some sort of "flying"animals with skins between the legs, so they could "fly" or "hover". The era of dinosaures ended by a meteorite, that landed somewhere near Mexico or the peninsula of Yukatan causing an enormous cloud of dust over the earth shading the sun, so that the warm climate turned so cold, that almost all animals died. I have heard, that there are still a few underwater aimals (fishes?) at bottom of the sea, that survived the meterorite catastrophe. I just wondered, if also bats are remnants from that old period.

Regarding FF5, I have seen, that when I close FF5 by clicking on the (x)-mark in the upper right corner, that window closes, but there is another window open beneath. And if I click on the (x)-mark on the second window, it closes, but it might be a 3rd FF window beneath, that I have to close by clicking on its (x)mark. The reason for this, I must investigate further. (Maybe caused by restarts when updating of extensions...or?)

Cheers,

sweidre
