My Community/your Community

Recommended Posts

I have recently been informed by a certain Immunet employee (via PM), the following information on "My Community"

The community is really all of the Immunet users. Your slice of the community is you and the people associated to your account. When a file is detected as clean or malicious on your machine, you benefit the entire community regardless of whether or not other users are linked to you. The advantage of linking users together is then we can do trends on how malware travels between users before it is actually caught. The other advantage is that we can show how much you contribute counting you and the the links associated with your account.

So .. if I understand it, a person with no one in their 'community' and not in anyone else's 'community' is no less protected than anyone else .. at all. Put another way .. you are just as protected with dozens in your 'My Community' as you are with no one in your "My Community".

Creating a 'robust' My Community does offer certain advantages .. but does not INCREASE your overall protection factor. As such, the PF indicator is very misleading .. in my opinion. The advantages that it offers is more given to Immunet than given to you ..

Hi WacoJohn,

This makes sense! I have always had the opinion that the total Immunet Community (at the moment 1,843,356 people protected from 27,369,155 threats) = "Cloud" protects everybody. There seems to be two Protection Factors: One PF for all members thru the "cloud" = Overall Protection Factor for all (but no value shown anywhere!). A second PF for your local "My Community (This PF is shown).

That means, that our local "My Communities" do not strengthen security of the members. The benefit for Immunet is very limited: To trace the spreading way of the malwares only! To some extent, I understand now the intention of Immunet to maybe remove "My Community" in the long run!

Cheers,

sweidre

This surely gives the developers more information to work on, which in turn is beneficial to all?

Immunet is marketed as a community based AV so it is not to their advantage to change this.

The community aspect fosters more communication in the long run.

I entirely agree.

Immunet is marketed as a community based AV so it is not to their advantage to change this.

I have a feeling they will keep it .. in order to assume the advantages to them it provides .. BUT, they may take it out of the software client we use ... it will be invisible to us. The reason I think so is because it is buggy. MY COMMUNITY does not seem to be fully 'functional' If you invite someone to your community .. and they do not accept, it appears they stay in your PENDING forever. In fact, I have someone PENDING who has accepted. When I think about it .. the concept requires some OVERHEAD that I do not think exists .. and probably will never exist .. such as 'aging' invitations, .. or allowing us to UNinvite long term pendings. All that would take some software code that I don't think exists. Plus, it is misleading .. having a community or NOT does not increase/decrease your protection. The MY COMMUNITY .. as far as the customer is concerned, is NONserving. It does serve IMMUNET CLOUD .. because it is conceived to INVITE non Immunet users to use it and thereby join the cloud. Of course that benefits every one ... but I would not THINK of inviting everyone in my Gmail contact list ... because of the dozens that may not comply will be stuck in my PENDING list .. and I can't get 'em out. The MY COMMUNITY needs to be either vastly improved ... or removed from the client .. it does them no good .. it is buggy, and it is useless (to the client).

The community aspect fosters more communication in the long run.

Perhaps. I think there are better ways to foster communication. I think there are better ways to 'recruit' new users. I think the My Community is poorly implemented ... and now that I realize there is no direct advantage to it (to me), it is no longer important that I 'use' it.

Hi,

I think, that Immunet has mislead all existing & presumptive users/subscribers by giving the following info (including videos) on its own homepage:

http://www.immunet.c...hare/index.html

PROTECT PEOPLE

Step 1: Download and Install Immunet FREE Antivirus

Click to download the latest version of Immunet FREE Antivirus.

To find out if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7 or Windows Vista, do the following:

1. Open System by clicking the Start button , right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.

2. Under System, you can view the System type.

Step 2: Add People to the Immunet Community

Add people to the Immunet Community directly from your Immunet Plus desktop software. Go to "My Community" and click "Add People". Enter your contacts email address, or invite them using your email system (supports Gmail, Yahoo! and Hotmail).

(Video 2)

Step 3: View Your Immunet Community

When your contact accepts the invitation to install Immunet Plus, they will appear in your protection community. View the Immunet Community video below to preview the social graph of an Immunet Community, which appears once a contact has accepted your invitation.

(Video 3)

Step 4: View Your Contact's Protection Status

Whenever you and your contact are online, you will see each other’s protection status as “active”. You no longer need to worry about infecting your friends with a virus. When your friend is using Immunet Plus, you reduce the risk that they may infect you with a virus. View the Immunet Community video below to see how Immunet Pluss you and your community against threats.

(Video 4)

-------------------------

My Comments:

As the Immunet Cloud is protecting all users, Immunet should not give the impression, that in addition "My Community" protects the members in its chart! Note, that this "My Community" is described by CNET as well! "My Community" is shown in many AV reviews/comparisons as an extra protection level in 3rd party articles & videos without any negations by Immunet!

Therefore, I suggest Immunet to remove all this misleading info from its homepage and make its excuses to all users (especially to PLUS users, who have paid for the product by false supposition )!

Cheers,

sweidre

Well at the end of the day, why do you think sourcefire paid $21 million to aquire immunet?

It is a major business concern.

When I was using windows, I was extremely happy to be able to triple my main internet security by using MSE and Immunet along with Comodo firewall.

(all free products) and if I was still using windows I would be happy to pay an annual fee for Immunet plus.

As stated above by WacoJohn the initial concept of community and the overheads now required have changed (as all things do)

There is a simple option > if a person is not satisfied with a given product, then they can always use another product.

That said I believe that Immunet is still one of the best anti-malware products available.

There is certainly an undeniable merit to Immunet free ... it protects, ... and it is free. I don't know anything about Immunet +. I do not plan on ever paying for protection (due to the huge availability of free products).

There is a difference between a complaint and a criticism. I think the criticisms I have for Immunet Free are valid. If Iummunet wants to take notice .. fine ... if not .... fine.

Hi WacoJohn,

I have tested Immunet PLUS, but as I have other security softwares, I had to skip PLUS, because my computer became very slow (like chewing-gum), but FREE was OK (only cloud-based). The questions & criticisms we had regarding Immunet FREE were valid but no response or time-table for iron-out bugs. Now, we know why! FREE will possibly be skipped one day! Only the PLUS & ENTERPRISE versions will make money for SourceFire. SourceFire purchased Immunet to earn money of course. Immunet FREE has already done its work as frontrunner & marketer!

Cheers,

Hi duncan,

Immunet had an attractive newish concept (= cloud-based) and the number of users & the marketshare were increasing. That is why SourceFire purchased Immunet to earn money thru paid products like PRO & ENTERPRISE (still in the pipeline, though). SourceFire reorganized Immunet, so that the developers had to go or received new positions. Personally, I think, that Immunet is the best cloud-based AV product. My intention was to use Immunet (purely cloud-based) as a supplement to my other security softwares. If the cloud-based Immunet will be skipped for PLUS & ENTERPRISE versions & as I had tried TETRA module once to many, I will uninstall Immunet for good!

( I think, we all have/had different reasons for using Immunet, and it is natural that one will leave the product, when it does not satisfy one's needs! )

Cheers,

sweidre
