Question About Bandwith

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I discovered Immunet few days ago and I have read a lot of information on it. The concept seems quite interesting, if not revolutionizing. However, I can't find answers to one question:

How much bandwith does Immunet is using?

I live in Canada where the bandwith is (quite) limited and I don't want to install Immunet and share with friends if it takes too much bandwith :/

Also, I was wondering what impact having a big community would have on bandwith.

Oh! And an extra question I was unsure about it: Does having a quite small community (let say fewer than 5 members) have any consequence on the protection brought by Immunet?

Ok, I know, that's three questions, but I don't think you'll mind (and if so, I hope three different people will answer to three different questions ;) ).

Thanks in advance!

Hello Zalan and welcome to the Immunet forum. I too am relegated to using an ISP that provides limited bandwidth. However I use Immunet with Panda Cloud AV which are of course both cloud based but don't see any real determent to speed. Immunet updates itself rather quickly so you shouldn't see the program using up a lot of bandwidth. When running scans with Immunet perhaps it would be a good idea not to surf the web at the same time. This could increase scan times as the program will connect to the Immunet servers. Although with the Clam AV module enabled Immunet will store definitions for off-line scanning as well. Normally I just run a daily Flash Scan which is very quick. If I encounter odd behavior that warrants investigation then I'll do a more comprehensive scan. The Community aspect of Immunet doesn't seem to impact bandwidth from my experience. I currently have 81 connections in my Community. The fact is though that having no one or 100's of other users in your My Community will not affect the protection you're already getting with the cloud modules, ClamAV module and the TETRA module for Plus users. There are advantages to having people in your Community however. This helps Immunet very quickly detect and respond to new or unseen threats being seen in the wild. This info being gathered from our individual communities helps every other user within the cloud in this way and that would include yourself and your friends if they decide to give Immunet a go. I hope you find this thread informative enough and welcome aboard! Ritchie... P.S. - I'd be happy to add you to my community. Give me a Private Message if that sounds good.

Thanks for fast reply!

I'm not really concerned by speed, but by the amount of data uploaded and downloaded. From what you are saying I understand that's not huge, but some numbers would be welcomed...

I guess it depends on usage, but I plan to use it pretty much like you do: Flash Scan daily + Full scan monthly or when "needed".

By month, would you say it can use over 500mb by itself?

And for the community, I was planning to add most of my close friends and family members. I was just wondering if there was specific issues/advantages to have a big community. I'm happy to see there is no visible impact (except spreading the word and helping!) ^_^

Oh! And thanks for the warm welcome! I'll definitely send you a PM once I set this up!

Got some numbers!!! (I really don't understand how I've missed them before...)

So, our current numbers show an average PC generating 120K a day in look-up traffic. So that's less than you will see with most web pages being pulled down over the wire.

Even if that answer is 1 year old, I guess the traffic is way under 500mb (sounds silly now hahaha!).

From what I understand, reaching 10mb in a month would be surprising!

So I'll install and recommend with no fear as soon as... I get some sleep (zZzZzZzz....)

Thanks again for the help!

No problem Zalan. I did remember reading a thread about specific bandwidth usage a while back but I couldn't remember the details. Well, you saved me from having to look up that thread, thanks, lol! Unfortunately I was thinking about my ISP data plan which is a DSL service (about 1 Mb/s) when I first responded which I fortunately get no upload/download limit though. A compensation for the slow speed no doubt. I'm guessing your plan has a restriction on how much data you can upload/download per month. So if that be the case I could see where you would want to be as frugal as possible with your Bandwidth. Regards, Ritchie...

Hello Zalan, As you might have noticed in the topic I added some numbers I personally tested. Well this AV use less internet speed and amount that normal AV solutions does because signatures from other AV providers do often take up to 2mb a day while Immunet remain under 1mb a day.

Best regards.

Pedersen
