Larry Godwin
Hello, I've installed Immunet 3 on my XP computer and cannot seem to connect to the Internet. I tried to download version 6.2.0 and it failed. On the main menu, the program says "0 people supported" and "0 threats." I checked my firewall and 3 Immunet applications are listed, all say "allow." I checked services and sfc.exe is running. Please help, and thank you.
ritchie58
Hello Larry, I regret to inform you that Immunet no longer supports the Windows XP platform. So the behavior you're seeing is a result of that. As time goes by you will see fewer software vendors supporting this old Operating System I'm sorry to say. You really should consider upgrading to a new platform Larry. XP is vulnerable to all sorts of malicious intrusions. If you just upgraded to Win 7 you would find a lot of similarities between the two platforms so it wouldn't be such a hassle learning a new Operating System. Immunet does support Windows 7. I'm currently still using Win 7 Ultimate x64 but I know eventually I'll have to upgrade to 10 once Win 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft. That's my own personal preference of course, but it seems that Win 10 still encounters "numerous" bugs so that makes me reluctant to upgrade at this time. Regards, Ritchie... Larry Godwin
Ritchie, thank you so much! I'm having the same problem with Baidu, another free antivirus program that scans fine on my XP machine but will not update its antivirus definitions. Do you happen to know if it, also, no longer supports XP? A third option for me is Amity Antivirus. I've tested it and it DOES seem to update. If that doesn't work I probably will buy a new computer with Windows 7. Thank you again. Best wishes, Larry
ritchie58
Hi Larry, to be perfectly honest I've never heard of the Baidu AV before! In order to see if the AV is compatible with XP might I suggest you contact their support staff. Don't be too surprised if this AV also no longer supports XP. I still believe that upgrading to Win 7 is you best option for security reasons. XP really is quite vulnerable even with a working anit-virus due to exploits that hackers can take advantage of. For now though I would suggest you "not do" any on-line banking, shoping or bill payments or anything that requires using a credit card or store any personal information you don't want compromised just to be on the safe side. Cheers, Ritchie...
Larry Godwin
Hi, Ritchie, Thank you again for your quick reply and sound advice. I found out today the company that puts out Baidu Antivirus has not maintained it for two years! I'm going to install ClamWin on the XP machine, although its scans are notoriously slow, and will NOT engage in online banking or commerce. By the way, the XP computer is at home and my wife and I use it mainly for e-mail. We seldom get on the Internet. In my office I use Windows 7 and love it. Guest Wookiee
Hey Larry! Not maintaining an antivirus software seems silly. I don't know why they didn't maintain it. We, at Immunet and ClamAV update it often. As far as speeds go, ClamWin is our engine but not maintained by us. ClamAV is maintained by us as well. ritchie58
I definitely agree Wookiee! What's the point of still offering an AV that is in essence so out-dated as to be practically useless. I normally don't put down other vendors products for ethical reasons but if this AV hasn't been maintained for 2 years then why is it still being offered for download then. "To me that's totally crazy too!!"
Larry Godwin
Dear Wookiee and Ritchie, Actually, after checking my notes, I find I misspoke. Please see this link: https://www.quora.com/What-happened-to-Baidu-Antivirus-Is-it-really-discontinued The person who wrote this in July 2017 didn't mention "two years" but did say it has no longer been supported "for some time." I'm looking for a free antivirus that supports (1) Windows XP and (2) my slow processor, AMD 3000+. I don't have an Athlon 64 processor, which is what Avast! and AVG free require. It appears Amiti Antivirus might be a contender for me; it requires CPU: Pentium 3 or later. Do you know anything about this program? Thank you both your interest and concern. Best wishes, Larry
Guest Wookiee
I would use ClamAV probably. though, it still might choke the processor on large scans
ritchie58
Hey Larry, here is a link to an on-line article you may find informative. It lists a number of AV's that are still compatible with XP. I know that Panda Free AV (now called Panda Dome) has a rather light system footprint that just might work with you specs. Like Immunet it automatically updates it's malware definition signature files without additional input from the user and will provide great protection for your XP machine. https://windowsreport.com/antivirus-windows-xp-service-pack-3/
ritchie58
Here's another app you may want to use Larry, Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit. Although Anti-Exploit has been incorporated into the Premium (paid) version of MB you can still use the newest 1.12 separate version. Best of all it's compatible with XP & it's free! The free version of A-E will help protect your browser of choice (one of the most common attack vectors) plus many commonly used applications such as file readers and media players. There's also a Premium (paid) version where you can add your own shields to protect just about any other app you can think of! It's not an AV in the traditional sense but will work along-side it providing additional exploit protection. As with Panda it is also stingy on system resources. Personally I think the Panda & Anti-Exploit combo would give you some really great coverage! BTW, I helped alpha/beta test A-E for several years and I still use it myself to this day. In fact I would "highly recommend" to anyone still running an XP machine to install this software! http://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mbae Cheers, Ritchie... Larry Godwin
Thanks, everyone, for your input. Clam AV is the only product that works on my antiquated XP with the slow processor but a scan took 11.96 hours! Malwarebytes works fine but doesn't detect infected files. I've checked for XP support or tried Panda, Sophos, Avira, Kaspersky, McAfee, FortiClient, Bit Defender, Zone Alarm, Bit Defender, Adaware, Comodo, and Amiti - no luck. Guest Wookiee
Is there a reason you stay on XP? WIndows XP is end of life, and honestly, it's not the best to stay on an operating system that isn't going to be updated anymore. You should consider an upgrade.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsforbusiness/end-of-xp-support
