sweidre
Hi, Here is an article by TechRepublic.com for removing crapware: "Five tips for getting rid of crapware" http://www.techrepub...of-crapware/345 Cheers, sweidre
ritchie58
Interesting article Sweidre. That PC Decrapifier would be great for someone who just purchased a new PC. Since many people use CCleaner here is a link for CCEnhancer 2.3 which greatly increases the functionality of CCleaner. It's an executable that adds a number of cleaning options to the crap cleaner (that's what CCleaner stands for). You can run it manually or automatically at start up and it will install the latest updates for Windows and the installed software apps that it recognizes. It does need internet access through your firewall to download and install the newest definitions into CCleaner. Of course you will need to install CCleaner first. It works great with Windows 7 but for some reason I couldn't get it to work on my roomy's XP Pro 32bit machine.

sweidre
Hi Ritchie, Thanks for the link to CCEnhancer2.3, but I will check the reviews of it on CNET first! Cheers, sweidre Hi again, There were no reviews of version 2.3, but of previous versions! Those reviews gave mixed impression (1 star to 5). I will wait a while, until there are reviews of v.2.3 available! Thanks anyhow! Cheers, sweidre

I will wait a while, until there are reviews of v.2.3 available! Thanks anyhow! Cheers, sweidre Hi Ritchie, After having done a Norton Ghost of my systemdrive, I'm now testing CCEnhancer 2.03; it seems to work fine by adding some cleaning options to CCleaner. I notice, that CCEnhancer is a part of: System Ninja 2.0.4 (Freeware) 1. Junc Scanner 2. Startup Manager 3. Process Manager 4. More Tools 4.1. Folder Junc Cleaner 4.2. File Analysr (infected file or not) 4.3. CCEnhancer 2.0.3 I am testing System Ninja now (I have a Ghost to go back to in worst case!) All modules work fine so far! The only minor hickup is, that I now get two CCleaner icons in the systemtray, both cleaning up in parallell for some reason, when I log into the computer! I noticed, that CCEnhancer has made CCleaner to find more registry items to clean up than before! Cheers, sweidre
sweidre
It works great with Windows 7 but for some reason I couldn't get it to work on my roomy's XP Pro 32bit machine. Hi Ritchie, I checked CNET about CCEnhancer 2.3. Nothing was written about 32/64-bit, I copied the following: General Publisher The Web Atom Publisher web site http://thewebatom.net/ Release date April 07, 2011 Date added April 06, 2011 Version 2.3 System requirements Operating systems Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP Additional requirements Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5. Has your roommate MS.NeT Framework 3.5 ? Regarding CCleaner, there was just written that it works for 64-bit now! (I take it for granted, that there must be a 32-bit version available still!) ritchie58
So that's why it wouldn't work with the XP machine! I didn't know that the app needed the .NET framework to function. Robert's PC doesn't have the .NET framework installed. It came pre-installed with my OS so I never made that connection as to why it wasn't functioning on his. I had thought about visiting the Piriform forums to seek a solution for Robert but never got around to do so. I think I'll get it installed so I can upgrade Robert's CCleaner with the CCEnhancer. Thanks for the info on that Sweidre! You are correct about CCleaner having a x64 version now. The installer will determine your OS and install the appropriate version automatically. I have the 64 bit version installed.
ritchie58
Another cleaner or two I have used for years is Wise Disk Cleaner 5.93. It usually finds a few files that CCleaner, Windows Disk Cleaner and Innovative Solutions's Advanced Disk Cleaner 5.0 misses. The Wise Disk Cleaner installer will ask you if you want the Ask toolbar so you have to opt out of that during installation or end up with more crapware however. Also you will have to register with Innovative Solutions to continue using the Advanced Disk Cleaner which is free and only takes a few minutes
sweidre
Disk Cleaners BleachBit (freeware) is rather new for me, but gives often error messages regarding above all FF & Google Chrome (Hmmm...). Hi Ritchie, I have examined BleachBit in detail, and now I have ticked/unticked items, so I will not get any red error messages, at all. I did this execise, because, as far as I know, this is the only software, that destroys index.dat files with cookies & history of surfing without rebooting! (index.dat files are necessary for Microsoft storing, but they are also used to store cookies & surfing traces by 3rd party sites) Cheers, sweidre
sweidre
Hi Ritchie, I downloaded & installed Advanced Disk Cleaner ! It works like Wise Disk Cleaner, but I liked Advanced Disk Cleaner more, so all the defintions in Wise Disk Cleaner I added into Advanced Disk Cleaner. ritchie58
I got the CCEnhancer to function properly on Robert's XP Pro PC. Not without some problems though. Thinking it would be best to install the newest version I installed the 4.0 version of .NET and found out CCEnhancer will not work on a XP machine with that build. I had to uninstall 4.0 and install the older 3.5 version to get it to work. The Web Atom does recommend using version 3.5 for XP. I should have checked first before trying to install 4.0. Oh well, live and learn!
ritchie58
As far as Advanced Disk Cleaner, it is one of the safest cleaners to use using the default settings. I have never known the app to delete any necessary Windows or program files and I have used it for years on both mine and Robert's PC. So it makes good sense for a newbee to computers to use this software.

Oh well, live and learn! Hi Ritchie, Nice to hear, that after instaling the older 3.5 version of .NET, CCEnhancer finally works for Robert! By hard trial & error, we learn, yes! Ninja, in spite of sounding as the name of a malware, really works good as an umbrella software including CCEnhancer, at least in my computer! Why CCEnhancer (?) causes CCleaner to appear with 2 icons in the systemtray when cleaning at computer, I have not looked into, because the 2 parallell CCleaner icons clean and disappear very quickly I have installed a cleaning software called BleachBit, that works properly sometimes but often with errors when cleaning FF & Chrome. Often I do not use BlechBit because of this. I will investigate the logfile of BleachBit further & maybe uninstall BleachBit.
